The State of the United States Army

Now my very beautiful friend brought up a few vaild points that I would like to comment on now.

I will begin with the overall state of the military which trickles its way down into every facet of military life. People are in awe at how much money it has cost to mobilize and fight this war. I, however am not surprised. We, the military are still recovering from the 1990’s where cutbacks took place in every spectrum of the military. For example, the most talented men in my field I ever met, even to this day, were removed from military service well before their 20 year goal due to cutbacks. Military medical facilities remained unchanged from the 1960 and 70s. Soldiers living conditions were generally below the standard of the average american prison. There was no money. For the first two years of my military service i lived in buildings that had been condemed 5 times before. Each time the Army had no choice but to pry down the boarded doors and move Soldiers in. I was taken care of in a hospital that was built in the 1940’s. Our equipment was generaly unchanged from the vietnam era equipment. The perfect example is HMMWVs and armor. Do you not think that we hadn’t thought of Armoring our vehicles long before this war was ever envisioned. We simply did not have the money to do it. Had you brought it up to the powers that be it would’ve just been shot down. It wasn’t necessary. Another good example, this the first war that soldiers have actual body armor, not just flack vests. The technology has been in military hands for decades. It just simply could not be done. The president Bush era military is no smarter then the military of old, we just have the money now. I am happy to hear that Americans are up in arms about the state of the military healthcare. I have already seen the outcome of that cry for change right here on the post I work on. Almost the entire base has been re-built. We have new barracks, a new hospital, new hangers, a new dental clinic, just to name a few and all of these repaced facilities that where generally built either during or before Vietnam. So you see, the state of our force cannot be blamed on the current administration, but only on those before it. Congress decides everything for the military and we have all seen how truely jacked up the congressional system is. It takes forever to get anything done. The best example of that is the federal budget. It is supposed to be approved and in use on October 1st of every year. Fact of the matter is we usually get temporary funds from the Congress to keep us operating while they debate until Febuary. It is a matter of fact, not opinion, when I say this, the United States Military wants war. We will want more when this conflict ends. We see things from an entirely different view then the average American. We talk about this exact fact in my office on a weekly basis.  “As soon as this war ends, it’s back to the poor house for the United States Army.”

Now I will not defend the current Government on their decisions, its not my place. I think it is unfair that it all falls on one man, when he doesn’t really get to make decisions as one man. I think people fail to realize that the economy really didn’t start to fail until after the congress was taken over by the democratic party…. But that is neither here or nor there. If you are one of those people who are under the impression that one man (or woman) can make that large of a difference in this huge committee we call a nation then i think you should relook how you view our current system. I hope I could give you a small slice from my view of things. I will give you one last thought. This last paragraph probably made most of you guys think that I will vote republican. I will tell you who will be marked on my ballot right now, “none of the above”

Army Life

I just watched another 30 second report on CNN showing an Army wife complaining about Soldiers being deployed. She was standing outside of her two story nice home with a BMW 328i and a Lincoln MKX in the drive way. Both of her kids had fully stocked bedrooms of toys, TV’s, video game and tons of other stuff. This young lady stated they had been married for about 8 years and that her husband had been serving in the military for about 12 years. I have also been serving for 12 years. Now this brings to mind a few points. One, she married him when he had alredy been serving for a few years. She married into the military. She should be fully versed on our military life works. I understand that military spouses have a challenging life. They are seperated from their loved ones for months and very seldomly for a year at a time. But on the other end of the spectrum I can go ride thru military housing right now and see a lot of spouses laying around the house. They don’t work and don’t want to. They just sit at home and suck down benefits. I know wives that refuse to work because they have their Soldiers (husbands) taking care of them. Don’t think they are only staying to be stay-at-home moms, I know a lot of couples that have no kids and still they sit at home, doing nothing but bitching about the Army. GET A JOB!

Let me tell you this, military life is good for most. Military pay and benefits are at their highest levels ever. When not deployed we get tons of free time off not to mention 30 days of vacation a year. Almost every month of the year consist of at least one if not two long weekends. Everyone has heard of the Armys college money offered to new recruits, but few know that you don’t even have to use it. While you are actively serving in the Army your college tuition it paid100%. Did I mention the military health care system. A soldier does not pay for any health or dental work done ever.. No matter how many times he or she sees a doctor, no matter the problem, it is free. Now I will tell you this, you go out and join the Army the day after you graduate high school, the first few years of military life will be demanding and the pay levels won’t be very high. However Soldiers do fine. I walk through my Soldiers barracks rooms every so often. Those guys have it made, they have no bills outside of their cars. They usually have 40-50 inch LCD TV’s, two or three video game systems and a room full of other gadgets. Everyone usually hears people complaining about soldiers deploying, but they rarely hear that the average married Soldier will see a minimum of a $1000 pay raise every month for his deployed time. That figure is the bottom figure, the higher your rank, the higher your pay  increase (mostly due to the fact that your pay becomes tax free while deployed.) Soldiers generally have it made. Every single Soldier that works for me begs to deploy. Yes, you read that correctly, begs to deploy. Every single day they argue amongst themselves about who will go next and for how long. I have to demand that they will replaced and come home half the time. Bottom line, being a Soldier isn’t such a bad deal. There is a lot more that can be said, but I will hold it for another day. Don’t believe what you hear on any news station. If a Soldier isn’t bitching, whining moaning and complaining about something he isn’t a happy Soldier……

Day 4 Million

OK, this broke up over my break up sh-t has to stop. It is killin’ me. This morning I was running my 2nd mile of 4 and I was just overwelmed by thoughts. I had this raging desire to call her right that second. It made my stomach turn and I was almost forced to stop and throw-up. I didn’t thank god and was able to finish the run at a good hard pace. Surprisingly enough i ran the 2nd set of two miles at the fastest pace I have ran in a while. I’m gonna start pushing my body harder. I have to focus on something. I might try to jump overseas and do what I do. At least it will get me away from this place and these damn thoughts. Tonight hasn’t been too terribly upsetting. I’ve played around here waiting for bedtime to come around. I need a wife / friend.
